Arthur C. Clarke, the well known scientist who lived half of his life in Sri Lanka, has once described “ The Island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) is a small universe; it contains as many variations of culture, scenery, and climate as some countries a dozen times its size” Sri Lanka was also known as the “Granary of the East” for its bumping harvests and rich agricultural practices, and “Pearl of Indian Ocean” for its beauty and astonishing diversity. Marco Polo has described the country as “The finest Island for its size in all the world. The two monsoon seasons bring the Island timely rainfalls, thereby innovating a rich irrigation engineering system which provides adequate amount of water to the needy areas for cultivation.

The Island nation, multi ethnic and multi-religious endows from ancient times, a legacy of many colorful festivals relating to Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian religions. These festivals are commemorated with flair of a people with a genius for pageantry and ritual. The most important being the Vesak, celebrated by Buddhists on Full Moon Poya day in May, commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment and Death of Buddha. The most tourist oriented festival is the Kandy Esala Perahera held in late July to August for 10 consecutive days climaxing on Esala (July) Poya day. Taking part in this are drummers, dancers, whip-crackers, torch bearers, acrobats and robed elephants. The reason for the festival, the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha is carried by a caparisoned tusker, for the people to venerate.
Surrounded by 1330 km coast, the Island Sri Lanka is an ideal location for surfing, wind surfing, water skiing, sailing, scuba-diving, snorkeling, speed-boating, banana boating, water-scooter riding etc. The sites are located in the Negombo region, Wadduwa, Kalutara, Bentota and Hikkaduwa in west and South west coasts, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Tangalle, Hambantota and Arugam-bay in South and South- eastern coasts. Sri Lanka having more than 100 rivers and lagoons and inland lakes have the facility to do camping trips and Kayaking and canoeing. Kithulgala is the best place to do white-water rafting through the Kelani River. Varied landscapes offer the opportunity for trekking, nature trails etc, in places like Sinharaja rain forest, knuckles mountain range, Horton plains and Hakgala Strickt Natural Reserve. Further, Para-gliding, rock-climbing, cave treks, mountain biking and hot-air ballooning are possible.
Sri Lanka possesses a high degree of biodiversity, 13% of the Island are conserved as national parks, reserves, sanctuaries and jungle-corridors. Conservationists have identified Sri Lanka (together with Western Ghats of India) as one of world biodiversity hot-spots. The Sinharaja Rain Forest is named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remarkably high proportion of endemic species. A wide variety of mammals such as elephants, leopards, sloth-bear, sambhur, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, water buffaloes, porcupines, civet cats, giant squirrels and monkeys can be observed in one of the 14 national parks on a jeep-safari. Also for ornithologists, fair amount of birds can be observed among 233 resident species (33 endemics) and migratory species, altogether numbering over 400 species. There are 171 reptiles including two crocodile species and 83 species of snakes out of which only 5 are lethal. Number of amphibians has risen to 106 of which 90 are endemic.

Breakfast at the hotel & proceed to Polonnaruwa.
Polonnaruwa - is the 2nd capital of Sri Lanka. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries A.D,and is a world heritage site. Here you can see the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya , the audience hall, the lotus bath, the Polonnaruwa statue (12th century) and the Parakrama Sam udra tank (lake) built by king Parakramabahu the great. There are also ruins of famous places of worship such as the Shiva temple, the Lankatileka, the Watadage, the Galpotha, the KiriVihareDagoba and the remains of a former temple of the tooth.

Afterwards proceed to Sigiriya and climb and sightseeing of the UNESCO World Heritage Sigiriya Rock fortress.

After breakfast at the hotel proceed to Dambulla Rock Temple - was built by king Walagambahu in the 1st century B.C. Dambulla is a world heritage site andis the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples.
Proceed towards Kandy. En route visit a spice garden to see the different spices that Sri Lanka is famous for. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed. Lunch at the spice garden.
Arrive in Kandy. In Kandy witness a traditional Sri Lankan dance show. Kandyan dance takes its name from Kandy, the last royal capital of Ceylon, which is situated about 72 miles (120 kilometers) from the modern capital at Colombo. Dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 04– Kandy / Pinnawala /Peradeniya / Kandy |
Breakfast at the hotel & proceed to Pinnawela. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage - is a home for about 60 elephants (out of which around 50 are baby elephants) found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. They are being cared, fed and trained by the wild life authority. The best time for your visit is at 9 in the morning, when you will have the opportunity of seeing these ‘babes’ being bottle-fed. You could also see the elephants having their daily baths at a river close by.

Return to Kandy.

Anuradhapura - is located in the north central part of the Island, it was the first capital and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka. It is the home of two world heritage sites. Many places of historical and archeological interest could be visited. Sri-Mahabodhi (sacred Bo-tree), brought as a sapling of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, it is over 2,200 years old and is the oldest historically documented tree in the world.

Mihintale - was where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka and is therefore regarded as the cradle of Buddhism. On this rock are many shrines and dwellings, originally used by monks. A grand stairway of 1,840 steps made of granite slabs 15 feet wide, leads to the summit from where one could get a splendid view of the surrounding countryside.

After breakfast at the hotel proceed to Dambulla Rock Temple - was built by king Walagambahu in the 1st century B.C. Dambulla is a world heritage site and is the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples. The complex of five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings is the largest area of paintings found in the world. The caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock and spanning 14 meters.
Proceed towards Kandy. En route visit a spice garden to see the different spices that Sri Lanka is famous for. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed. Lunch at the spice garden.
Arrive in Kandy. In Kandy witness a traditional Sri Lankan dance show. The caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock and spanning 14 meters. Proceed towards Kandy. The audience hall, the lotus bath, the Polonnaruwa statue (12th century) and the Parakrama Sam udra tank (lake) built by king Parakramabahu the great. There are also ruins of famous places of worship such as the Shiva temple, the Lankatileka, the Watadage, the Galpotha, the KiriVihareDagoba and the remains of a former temple of the tooth. After B' fast proceed to Habarana, the Heart of the Sri Lanka’s cultural trangle. En route to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Dambulla Golden Cave Temple. The rock of Dambulla is the centre of a Buddhist cave-temple complex established in the 3rd century B.C. and occupied continuously to this day. Its location has marked a transportation node between the Eastern and Western Dry Zones and between the Dry Zones and the central mountains throughout the history of Sri Lanka. The cave-temple complex is established on an inselberg or erosional remnant of importance in the study of the island's geological history. The 25 hectare site proposed for inscription also includes evidence of human occupation going back to the prehistoric period, including the recently excavated megalithic cemetery at Ibbankatuwa.
Afterwards proceed to Sigiriya to climb and sightseeing of the UNESCO world Heritage Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya sometimes also referred to as the eighth wonder of the world dates back from over 7,000 years ago, through Pre-Historic to Proto-Historic to Early Historic times, then as a rock-shelter mountain monastery from about the 3rd century BC, with caves prepared and donated by devotees to the sangha.
